ski touring in georgia

What better way to experience new cultures, great wine, and remote peaks than adventure skiing? A trip to Georgia offers all that and more – come ski-tour in within sight of 5000m peaks, in the land where wine was first made, in villages that have been cultural and economic crossroads since the Silk Road – Georgia.

We’ll travel with IFMGA guides Pawel Kunachowicz and Rob Coppolillo. Pawel has ski-toured in the southern Caucasus mountains for years, meeting the locals and discovering the beauty and history of Georgia. Rob and Pawel teamed up in Chamonix, France, and have run trips throughout Europe, on Svalbard, and now in the high mountains of Georgia.

Most travelers will reach Tbilisi, Georgia, via Istanbul, another spectacular gem of history and culture. Once in Tbilisi, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner, tour the city, visit a hot springs, and of course sample the wine – Georgia has the oldest recorded winemaking in history. From there we travel by small plane, weather permitting, to Mestia, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the heart of the southern Caucasus.

(Visa requirements: none for Americans staying 365 days or less. For other countries, please verify with your federal government if you require a visa to visit Georgia.)

Once in Mestia, we’ll backcountry tour for two days at a local ski resort and for four more days use local drivers to reach remote trailheads. Your trip cost covers lift tickets, local drivers, our stay at a four-star hotel (pool and sauna!), and breakfasts. Dinners will be on your own in local restaurants.

We will ski, eat, drink, and encounter a true melting pot of cultures in Georgia. It’s a wild, beautiful landscape and our team of local guides will help us get the most of out of this adventure-ski destination.
